Mumbai schools and colleges to be shut for 7 days

With swine flu fatalities going up, the Maharashtra government ordered the closure of schools and colleges in Mumbai for a week and theatres and multiplexes for three days.

The education department ordered the closure of all educational institutes, including schools, colleges, coaching classes and university in Mumbai. The decision was taken this morning after conducting a review of the current situation.

The education department has also scrapped the second unit test which was to be held this month for classes I to X.

The BMC had asked citizens to vote via SMS on whether they wanted schools to be shut, and had took the decision. Mahrashtra has the highest number of swine flu deaths in the country so far.

"A decision was taken to shut down all schools, colleges and other educational
institutions in the city from till August 20 due to the swine flu scare," a department official said.

Several private schools and international schools had already shut down temporarily as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena and the NCP have appealed to people to keep dahi-handi programmes during Janmashtami a low key, to check the virus from spreading.
