Tired of asking your child to get off the couch and get some exercise? Don’t worry. City schools are now trying to make exercising appealing to students. To encourage students to stay fit, schools are offering trendy exercises like pilates, capoeira and altitude.

Sedentary lifestyle of children where they are either glued to the television or video games or binging on fast food has got schools worried about their fitness. The director of NES International School, Mulund, said: “Fitness is a huge concern. Children are not going out to play. We are seeing a rise in juvenile diabetes; children are becoming overweight or worse still, obese. Physical education periods are not enough. We need to attract children to exercises and sports.”

Many schools are going for new forms of exercises that will attract children. Hima Doshi, principal of Ajmera Global School in Borivli is looking at introducing exercises like pilates and altitude exercises which are in vogue. The school is planning to take their students above 12 years of age on a field trip to a pilate studio run by John Gloster, who was a former Team India physiotherapist, and currently with the Rajasthan Royals. “If we continue with the traditional exercises, students get bored and do not follow it rigourously. So, we have decided to take them for a field trip to a pilate studio, where the students will get an opportunity to experience this form of exercise. Depending on the response from students and their parents, we might then introduce it into our curriculum. Pilates is a popular form of exercising found in modern gyms and helps in a balanced development of the body.”

Similarly, Jamnabai Narsee School, Juhu, is offering martial arts in a new way by combining it with music and dance. The learning enrichment centre of the school offers capoeira, a Brazilian martial art form, after school hours. “This form of martial art is done with music and drum beats and hence is very popular with the students. The martial art aspect in this form is subtle and disguised. So students have fun learning it,” said Sudeshna Chatterjee, school principal.

While doctors commend the school efforts for students fitness, they also warn schools that they have proper guidance and professionals for such exercises.
