If everything goes as per plans, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) might begin work on the Peddar Road flyover in October.

In a boost to the long-pending project, the MSRDC has decided to go ahead with the construction of the controversial 4.2km flyover with slight modifications which will do away with the need for major environmental clearances. The project which was conceived around a decade-and-a-half ago was put on the backburner because of opposition from celebrity residents such as Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle and the residents.

The four-lane flyover will begin near the Haji Ali junction and end at Tambe Chowk near Wilson College. The new plan will follow the existing alignment of the road and its piers will not encroach on the Chowpatty as proposed earlier.

“Initially, we planned to withdraw the permission for the project sought by us from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. Now we will ask the Centre to grant approval or refer it to the state government for its nod in case it falls under their purview,” said a senior MSRDC official.

He added that if things went as planned, they would float tenders soon and work was likely to start in October. The official said that the around Rs320-crore project might be delayed if the clearances were delayed.

The Haji Ali and Chowpatty arms of the flyover would need clearances as they fall under CRZ II zone, he said. However, modifications to the original plan will ensure that the ramp at the Chowpatty-end would not fall under CRZ I. The official added that the flyover, which would be a pre-cast steel structure to help it set faster, would be constructed in around 15 to 18 months. Noise and vision barriers will be put up on the flyover to ensure local residents are not inconvenienced because of the traffic.

The official said that as part of the traffic diversion plan, they planned to take up work on the flyover in phases “so that the entire road is not disturbed”.
