The rain gods are pleased. For the second day on the trot, the city received pre-monsoon showers on Thursday. The weathermen recorded a rainfall of 14.6mm in just a couple of hours.

According to Indian meteorological department (IMD) officials, the Santa Cruz weather station recorded 14.4mm of rainfall over a 24-hour period and 0.2mm of rainfall from the morning to the evening on Thursday. The Colaba weather station, though, experienced a dry spell in the same period.

“The current rainfall is just pre-monsoon showers. So far, the monsoon has reached Harnai at Ratnagiri and is yet to arrive in the city,” said Ajay Kumar, an IMD official.

He said at present, the rain-bearing western disturbances are hovering over Jammu and Kashmir.

“The upper air cyclonic circulation is extending up to the mid-troposphere (distance of 5.8 km upwards) over Jammu and Kashmir and its neighbourhood, which is why the monsoon has not gone beyond Harnai,” he explained, adding that as long as the western disturbances stay over Jammu and Kashmir, the monsoon will not move further.

The much wanted showers, though, did little to cool the city on Thursday. The mercury went up by 5°C after it had dipped a day before. The Colaba weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 35°C, while the Santa Cruz station registered one  of 33°C. The minimum temperatures recorded at Colaba and Santa Cruz were 26.6°C and 25.2°C, respectively.

On Wednesday, the Colaba weather station had recorded a maximum temperature of 29.6°C, while the Santa Cruz station registered 30.5°C.

“The mercury rose on Thursday because the sky was clear. An overcast sky on Wednesday had led to the dip in temperature then,” explained Kumar.

The few showers raised the humidity, with Colaba recording a level of 82% and Santa Cruz registering  71% in the morning. But evening, the levels dropped to 65% and 78% at Colaba and Santa Cruz, respectively.

The IMD said the sky will be generally cloudy and there might be some rain or thundershowers in parts of the city and the suburbs on Friday.
