Following the rape of a lady police constable at the Kolhapur Police Training School, the Maharashtra police will be including the course on gender sensitisation for the police in the their syllabus. The Women’s Commission will prepare the capsule for the syllabus and would impart training to the police recruits in this regard.

“We were approached by the Women’s Commission who told us that they are ready to impart training to our men regarding gender sensitisation and we agreed to it. They would be preparing a capsule of training for our men. Through this training we will sensitise our force that all genders are equal and should be respected,” said director general of police, Maharashtra, Ajit Parasnis. He added that, the whole concept is in the pipeline and soon the full fledged syllabus in this regard would be prepared for the police recruits across the state.

Another senior police officer, on the condition of anonymity said that, “Women are coming in large numbers to join police force and with more women in the force, possibilities of their exploitation and attraction towards opposite sex cannot be ruled out. In order to avoid situation like Kolhapur in future, this course will prove to be very fruitful.”

In April, this year, the department was left embarrassed when a lady police constable made a stunning revelation that she was raped by a policeman from the training centre at Kolhapur.

Following this, a deputy superintendent of police and a police inspector were suspended, while the concerned superintendent of police was shunted. An inquiry into the whole issue was constituted and the accused police constable was placed under arrest.

There eight police training schools in state and annually around 11,000 recruits are trained at these centres. The course on gender sensitisation will be added to the seven subjects that the recruits are taught.
