If there is one thing Mumbaikars hate the most, it is getting to work every day.

Most of the 41% of Mumbaikars, who have to travel for over three quarters of an hour to get to work, say the massive sound and air pollution caused by the movement of such a large number of people leaves them exhausted and stressed out by the time they reach work.

As a result, these employees often arrive at work or appointments late because of traffic jams and delayed trains.

The survey of over 10,000 business respondents across the country in 2010, also points out that people who travel in private vehicles are also subject to the same stressful experience.

These irritants faced by commuters, which include pollution and overheating, dangerous driving and road rage, were becoming a menace for Indian businesses, the survey conducted by research firm Regus has found “These results are perhaps unsurprising given the congestion on roads in India’s major business cities, and the resulting issues of which any commuter will be aware,” said Madhusudhan Thakur, company head of Regus.

The survey questioned respondents on the time they spent everyday commuting, and what factors contributed to their resultant stress.

Sixty percent flagged pollution, 50% blamed dangerous driving, while the others admitted to facing road rage. Other factors included loud mobile phone conversations and foul body odour.

Besides this, many commuters are unaware of how traffic and service interruptions will send their daily plans into a tailspin. A commuter is also not free from the annoyances of his fellow traveller - bad body odour, food smells and ringing mobile phones only exacerbate the situation.
