Unlike their counterparts in taxi unions, autorickshaw unions in Mumbai have not reacted adversely to the state's resolution recommending an immediate fare hike of Rs2 for three-wheelers and Rs1 for taxis.

The Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union led by its general secretary Sharad Rao is most likely to accept the Rs2 hike with some riders in a press conference. “We will explain our position on the resolution in the conference on Thursday. Though it will mostly be positive, there will be some riders,” a union member  said, adding that they had no intentions of staging agitations.

Till now, no union has declared its position on the government resolution. This resolution created controversy when changes were made to the original recommendations of the Hakim Committee.

A senior transport department official said that all auto unions had taken part in the meeting on Wednesday on electronic metre calibration. “They were satisfied with the Rs2 hike and are now cooperating with us on planning out the metre recalibration issue,” he said.

Sharad Rao criticised taxi unions for going on an indefinite strike despite getting an immediate hike. “They don't have the strength to carry out a city-wide agitation. We don't plan on launching any such agitations to force a Rs3 hike, as was recommended by the Hakim Committee. Our detailed position will be declared tomorrow,” he said.

The union's assistant general secretary Shashank Rao attended the meeting on behalf of the union. “We gave our suggestions and recommendations on metre recalibration to transport officials. Hopefully, they will take those into account while arriving at guidelines about the issue,” he said.

The proposals will guide the decisions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) when it meets on Friday.
