A controversy has erupted between two rival fleet taxi companies, whose services emphasise on women’s convenience and empowerment, over the introduction of prepaid taxi services at the airport. The reason: the Andheri RTO on Tuesday permitted Priyadarshini cabs and For She cabs to have dedicated prepaid taxi services from December 1.

Viira Cabs has alleged that Priyadarshini Cabs used its political clout to obtain permission for running a prepaid taxi service with a dedicated counter, separate from the black and yellow taxis and cool cabs, at the domestic airport. The company also claimed that Priyadarshini violates rules, the drivers extort money and yet it, along with For She Cabs, has been given permission to operate such a service.

Revathi Siddhartha Roy, mentor (women’s empowerment), at Viira cabs alleged: “A commercial entity (GVK) cannot be forced to favour a private company’s business. Sushie Shah has used her Congress connections to get RTO’s permission. Introducing such services at the airport will only create a law and order problem as women drivers will be vulnerable to unlawful elements among the other black and yellow taxi and auto rickshaw drivers.”

Sushie Shah, of Priyadarshini Cabs, rubbished Roy’s allegations. “I have been following up on the issue with the officials since 2009 and have used official channels to get the required permissions. In any case, if they have problems with the prepaid scheme, they should not join the service,” said Shah.

AN Bhalachandra, regional transport officer, was unavailable for comment.
