She is a mother to thousands of orphans. Her story is the stuff movies are made of. That’s precisely why film-maker Anant Mahadevan is making a movie on the life of social worker Sindhutai Sapkal.

The film, produced under the banner of Siddhivinayak Cinevision, will chronicle the trials and tribulations of Sapkal, who runs four orphanages in the state, so that many can draw inspiration from her.

A winner of the prestigious Ahilyabai Holkar award, Sapkal is also upbeat about this film that is titled Mee Sindhutai Sapkal. Sachin Khanolkar is the producer of the film and actor Tejaswini Pandit will portray the transition of Sindhutai from the age of 18 years to 40 years while her mother and noted theatre actor Jyoti Chandekar will essay the role of Sindhutai in the sixties.

The movie also stars noted actors like Upendra Limaye, Suhas Palshikar, Neena Kulkarni, Uday Tikekar, Charusheela Sable, Vinay Apte and Jayant Wadkar.

The screenplay of this film is based on an autobiographic Marathi book Mee Vanavaasi written by Sindhutai herself. Mahadevan has written the screenplay along with Sanjay Pawar while the dialogues have been written by Pawar. Cameraman K Rajkumar is going to shoot the film and the music is being composed by Ashok Patki, who is famous for his emotional pieces.
Khanolkar said, “Sometime back Anant Mahadevan came to me with a newspaper cutting of Sindhutai. He was so impressed with her work that he said he wanted to make a film on her life. I was pleasantly surprised that a director from Hindi film industry wanted to make a film on her. We then came to Hadapsar to meet her. First she was a little apprehensive about the film but then she came to Mumbai thrice to meet us and finally she was convinced that we will do justice to the film.”

While listening to the stories behind several precious moments of her life in Sindhutai’s own words, she left a sound impression on Mahadevan. The film traces some of the turning points in her life, be it abandoning her education on account of her marriage, warming herself near a burning funeral pyre, while being frozen during a cold wave and feeding oneself by eating rice offered to the dead. The story of her life then soars to the honour of being able to express herself from the dais of an international forum in USA.

Though it’s a feature film and not a documentary, the film-makers have emphasised on the realistic portrayal of her life. Limaye will be playing the role of Sindhutai’s husband.

The film is being shot in Kolhapur, Mumbai and USA. “We unveiled the poster of the film in the recently held Berlin International Film Festival and we got many enquiries from international audiences and film-makers. After hearing her story many called her the Mother Teresa of Maharashtra,” said Khanolkar.
