Mumbai's govindas break dahi handis as well as bones

The zest to break the Dahi Handi might cost Ramu Sandipo Narsingh, 20, his right hand after he fell from a height of 20ft while attempting to break a Dahi Handi in Colaba.

A resident of Masjid Bunder, Ramu was part of the Swami Vivekanand Mitra Mandal group. He, along with his group, had broken four Dahi Handis and was attempting to break the fifth when he fell and injured his hand.

He was rushed to St George hospital and later transferred to KEM hospital because of the seriousness of the injury. “He has dislocated his right elbow and ruptured the artery in the elbow region. We are trying to save his hand but right now it is 50% chance,” said a doctor from the surgery department.

A team of doctors from cardiovascular thoracic department and orthopaedic department of KEM hospital were performing the operation.

Like Ramu, 50% of the Dahi Handi casualties were in the age group of 20 and below 20.

Sion hospital got 25 injured patients of which six were admitted for fractures and head injuries. St George Hospital had seven patients of which two suffered from head injury. While Nair hospital, 15 govindas were brought to casualty and three were admitted to be treated for head injuries.
