Aggrieved by the situation in Manipur following the 75-day blockade of the national highway to the north-eastern state, former Union minister and social worker, Mohan Dharia, would be witting to the prime minister and to the chairman of the planning commission to take urgent steps to relieve the citizens of the hardships they face.

“The government has to remain responsive to the feelings of the people in Manipur. A government which cannot be responsive to the people of the nation does not deserve to be in power,” said Dharia.

“Right to equality is guaranteed to the people in the Constitution. I will appeal to the prime minister to work towards lifting the blockade and reduce the prices of commodities in Manipur.”

He was speaking at a press conference organised by Sarhad at Patrakar Bhavan in Navi Peth on Sunday. Also present were retired India Information Service (IIS) officer BB Sharma, senior journalist K Saroj Kumar Sharma, advocate Salam Rupachandra Singh and theatre musician Jeevan Ninghton.

The blockade of the crucial national highway by the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) in Manipur from August 1 has been preventing vital goods from reaching the state. The SHDDC is demanding the upgradation of the sub-division in Naga-dominated Senapati district into a full-fledged district.

Said BB Sharma, “Manipur depends on supplies from outside and trucks carrying essentials and other goods from the rest of India use NH-53 and NH-39, passing through Nagaland and Assam. With the road blockade the people of the state are deprived of their rights and necessities,”

The representatives of Manipur met anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare on Friday for his support in the matter. “Anna has readily supported the cause as he understands the problems of the people living in Manipur. On his request Arvind Kejriwal and Akhil Gogoi will visit Manipur on October 24,” Ninghton said.
