Irked at the filmmaker’s refusal for a private screening for party chief Raj Thackeray, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists tore and blackened posters of ‘332 Mumbai to India’ in Kurla and Juhu on Wednesday.

“If there is nothing objectionable in the film, the makers should not be refusing a screening for us,” Vageesh Saraswat, MNS vice-president to DNA.

He added that they will not let the movie run in cinema halls without the party chief’s approval. “Filmmakers cannot use provocative language or distorted incidents in the name of creative freedom and get away with it,” Saraswat said.

The movie is based on a real life incident, where a Bihari had hijacked a bus to bring to attention the MNS’s assault on North Indian job-seekers in Mumbai. MNS activists have been demanding to see the film to ensure that there are no derogatory references to Thackeray.

Meanwhile, the makers of ‘332 Mumbai to India’ are adamant that there will be no private screening for the MNS.

“As long as we have clearance from the censor board, the hue and cry raised by a parallel authority like the moral police or a political party makes no difference to us. We are going ahead with the release as scheduled and will take all the necessary security measures,” said Dharmesh Raj Kotia, chief finance officer of K Sera Sera Productions, which is presenting the film.

Incidentally, the film and its makers have found support from Samajwadi Party (SP) activists, who met Rajnish Seth, joint commissioner of police (law and order) on Wednesday evening.

“Our delegation presented a memorandum asking for police protection at cinema halls. We have also asked for action to be taken against the MNS for issuing threats and taking law in their hands,” said Farid Khan, Mumbai secretary of the SP.

Seth said that he had asked the SP delegation to provide him with a list of names of cinema halls, scheduled to screen the film. “We will station policemen outside the theatres,” he added.

Meanwhile, the makers are also arranging for private security guards and bouncers outside their offices and at theatres across the city. The film will be released this Friday.
