The National Meteorological Training Institute (NMTI) in Pune, which trains meteorology and defence personnel, may soon start training students.
A proposal to that effect was sent to the government by the NMTI. The institute runs courses for officials of India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute for Tropical Meteorology and defence personnel.
It also trains officials from other countries sponsored by World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
There is no provision to train college and university students.
Deputy director general of meteorology (training) Somenath Dutta said, "We may do it phase-wise rather than opening it up completely for students. Postgraduate science and geography students will benefit."
Meanwhile, the 25th session of WMO's panel of experts on education and training will be held at NMTI from March 26 to 30.
