Two persons were killed and three were seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon in an accident involving three vehicles on Palm Beach Road in Navi Mumbai.

Around 4pm, a Ford Endeavour, being driven by third-year MBBS student Kushal Avasthi, 23, jumped over the divider near Bhumiraj complex and rammed into a Hyundai Accent on the other side.

Fifty-year-old Sanjay Radkar, president of Lands of Reliance SEZ, and his driver, Rajendra Kadam, 28, were killed, while his wife Shubhangi, 40, is critically injured and has been admitted to Sushrusha Hospital in Nerul.

“We are trying to save her,” Dr Sanjay Taralkar from Sushrusha Hospital said, adding that she is brain dead.

Kadam died on the spot, while Radkar, who was an ex-deputy collector of revenue, was declared dead on admission to the same hospital. The three were going in the Accent to Belapur from Vashi.

Police said Avasthi, a student of DY Patil Medical College and Hospital, was heading towards Mumbai with friend Sonia Maskita, 18, a first-year MBBS student of the same college. Both have suffered fractures and have been admitted to DY Patil Hospital.

Avasthi is a resident of Juhu, while Maskita lives in Bandra, the police said, adding that Avasthi’s father is a doctor, while the girl’s father is a chartered accountant and mother is a doctor.

“Usually, both travelled together to the college,” a police officer said, adding that their Endeavour also hit the Santro of one Ranjana Gupta who was travelling with her parents. The passengers of Santro are safe.

“We’ll interrogate the survitors to know the exact cause of the accident,” senior inspector Prakash More of the Turbhe police station said, adding that Avasthi would be arrested after he is discharged.

SY Dhivare, ACP (traffic), said a case had been filed against Avasthi under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as 304 A (causing death due to negligence).
