The Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) has made a series of demands to the railway ministry, including improvement of connectivity between Pune and other parts of the country.

The railway minister, Mamta Banerjee, would be presenting the Railway budget later this month.

The additional director general of MCCIA, Anant Sardeshmukh, and chairman of the railway and road traffic management committee of MCCIA, Chandmal Parmar, said on Wednesday there is a need for better connectivity between Mumbai and Pune.

“There are no trains from Pune to Mumbai from 10 am to 11.30 am, 12.30 pm to 2 pm and again from 7 pm to 7.30 pm. We need more trains as there are businessmen who want to travel
during those times,” the MCCIA functionaries added.

Parmar said there is also a need for better connectivity between Pune and southern India, Rajasthan, Gujarat and the Konkan region of the state.

“Cleanliness is a major issue at the Pune railway station. We want the railway authorities to pay adequate attention to this,” they stressed.

Authorities have ignored the congestion and parking problems outside the Pune railway station and  railway stations in Khadki, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Dehu Road and Talegaon.

MCCIA has pressed for new termini at Pune station for long distance trains.

Parmar said nearly 200 trains pass through the city daily.
“We need two additional termini at the station, one for trains moving towards the south and east and the other for moving towards Mumbai and north via Vasai. Unfortunately, land is not available with the Railways, so we have suggested that such termini could be set up at Khadki, Manjari, Lonavla and Daund stations,” he said.

Claiming that the electrification work of the Pune-Daund section has also been delayed, Sardeshmukh apprehended that it would take another two years for completion of the project due to unavailability of funds.

“The number of daily commuters travelling between Lonavla and Pune is increasing constantly. The authorities need to increase the capacity of existing rakes and frequency of the trains,” he added. The MCCIA has also stressed the need for new trains from Pune to Ahmednagar and Aurangabad via Shirur and Nevsa, and on Pune-Nashik route via Chakan, Narayangaon and Sangamner.
