The Marathi film producers’ fight against theatre owners in the city gained momentum on Monday, as the Marathi film industry turned up in big numbers at a meeting called by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray. The meeting was a full house with several Marathi filmmakers like Mahesh Manjrekar, Prasad Oak, Raju Patil, Kedar Shinde, Kishori Shahane-Vij and Madhura Jasraj in attendance.

Thackeray had invited the producers to discuss the problems they face while releasing their films at multiplexes and the discrimination they are subjected to by theatre owners. Addressing the filmmakers, Thackeray said that multiplexes will have to allot primetime slots to Marathi movies. The MNS chief added that he would personally write a letter to each Marathi household, appealing them to watch watch Marathi films and dramas.

“The state has issued a government resolution (GR) regarding the release of Marathi films, but all MNS legislatures in the assembly will put pressure on the government to make it into a law,” said Thackeray, adding that multiplex owners have to reserve one screen exclusively for Marathi films.

Thackeray urged the Marathi filmmakers to attempt new and different kinds of themes and subjects in movies to bring back audiences to theatres. “And, even after that if you face any problems, MNS will take necessary action, if required,” said Thackeray.

Shahane-Vij, whose movie Aika Dajiba released last week, said it was decided at the meeting that producers should meet once every month to discuss the hardships being faced for release of movies. Director Rajiv Patil said, “Maharashtra is the only market for Marathi films. If theatre owners refuse to play our films, where are we supposed to screen them?”
