The Marathas have reiterated their demand for reservation. The Maratha Arakshan Sangharsha Samiti (Mass), Maharashtra, an umbrella organisation of 15 Maratha bodies, has demanded reservation for Hindu Marathas in two phases. This was stated by Mass chairperson Suresh Patil while addressing the press after a meeting with home minister RR Patil on Wednesday.

They want 25% reservation for Marathas in schools, colleges, and jobs in the first phase which they want implemented this year. In the second phase, they demand political reservation and reservation in promotions.

“Marathas comprise approximately 35% of the total population in Maharashtra. Of these, 90-95% is socially and economically backward. We have asked the government for reservation,” said Patil.

The group had demanded reservations before the assembly election. “Sharad Pawar had promised that our demands will be looked into. We could not put pressure since the election code of conduct was in place. However, now we intend to go to schools and colleges encouraging youths to support our demand,” said Mass’s Mumbai president, Vijaysinh Patankar.

At present, the state provides 52% reservation for SC, ST, and OBC among others. And Mass wants reservation from the remaining 48%. “We will take a resolve to ensure that reservation is given to us,” added Patil. An oath-taking ceremony has been organised in Shivneri, the birth place of Shivaji Maharaj, on his birthday on February 19.

The organisation has claimed that they have been promised a meeting with chief minister Ashok Chavan within ten days.
The Mass also asked for withdrawal of cases against Marathas across the state. “The home minister has assured us that he would look into the matter and withdraw the cases where there has been no loss of life or any damage to property,” claimed Patil.
