A 21-year-old college-going girl recently complained to the cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC) of the Mumbai police that her father had hacked into her cellphone to keep a tab on her meetings with her boyfriend.

Jyotsna Randhawa (name changed) had gone to meet her boyfriend near Girgaum Chowpatty without telling her parents. After she reached there, her father turned up and took her home. Randhawa did not have any idea how he came to know about her meeting plans and the exact location and timing.

Her parents were against her meeting or being in a relationship with the boy and had asked her to stop it. However, she had continued against their wishes.

“We took her cellphone and checked it. Initially, nothing was found, but later, during detailed investigation, we found that there was a small piece of software hidden in the cellphone. This was a denial of service attack software. This is how Randhawa’s father had been finding out about her plans that she was making through phone calls or SMSes,” said a senior CCIC official.

On another occasion, Randhawa planned and met her boyfriend at a place in the western suburbs and this time as well her father turned up at that place and caught her. Randhawa suspected that her father was spying on her movements and her phone calls. So she decided to communicate with her boyfriend through SMS.

She sent him an SMS and they decided to meet at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. When this meeting got fixed, her father was in Delhi for a meeting, so she thought he would not be able turn up at the place this time.

However, she was caught again, not by her father but by her brother. A frustrated Randhawa then approached the CCIC.

The official added, “The software had been installed by Randhawa’s father, when she was taking bath, using Bluetooth. After that he started getting calls and SMSes in the form of alerts every time Randhawa used her phone.”

Officials informed this to Randhawa, but as her father was doing this for her well being she did not register a case.
