The Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MahaGenco) is planning to develop three Greenfield coal-based thermal power projects in Vidarbha with a combined capacity of 3,960mw.

A senior MahaGenco official confirmed that the land for the coal-based plants had been identified at Manora in Gondia’s Tiroda taluka, Kanpa in Nagbhid taluka and Mendki in Bramhapuri taluka (both in Chandrapur).
Each of these projects will have two supercritical units each with a capacity of 660mw.

However, the project’s planning, including the land acquisition, was still at a “preliminary stage”, said the official, adding that a joint-venture route may also be considered for the projects.

Meanwhile, MahaGenco is also following up on the water supply and long-term coal linkages for these projects with the state’s irrigation department, the union coal ministry and the Central Electricity Authority respectively.

Expected to come on stream in 2016 and 2017, the three projects will need coal linkages of 3.44 million metric tonnes per annum for each set.
