The commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, Lt Gen DP Vats, has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) by president Pratibha Patil on the occasion of Republic Day.
Vats, a graduate of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, was commissioned into the Indian Army in August 1975. He has done his MS (ophthalmology) from AFMC, Pune, in 1982.
He has held various prestigious appointments during his career, in the course of which he was invested with the Vishist Seva Medal (VSM) and Sena Medal (SM).
Several of the faculty and staff of AFMC, Pune, have received awards on the occasion of Republic Day and Army Day 2011 for distinguished service.
They include Brigadier Velu Nair, an eminent haematologist, with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM); the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Commendation Cards to Brig NS Mani, Colonels VS Gurunadh and Navdeep Sethi, Lieutenant Colonels KJ Singh and Handita Hazra, and Dr Kalpana Srivastava.
Bombay Sappers’ 191st Group Day
The Bombay Sappers are celebrating their 191st Group Day 2011, from January 28 to 31. It commemorates the award of a Victoria Cross, the highest pre-independence gallantry award, to Second Lieutenant PS Bhagat on January 31, 1941 in Abyssinia.
Major General Vinod Kumar Bhatt, colonel commandant of the Bombay Sappers, will be the chief guest while Colonel S Ramanathan will command the commemoration parade.
CME staff honoured
Various staff of the College of Military Engineering (CME) were awarded various decorations on the occasion of Republic Day. Naib Subedar Rajesh Kumar, Havildar Ranjit Singh and Havildar Anik Kumar have been awarded the COAS Commendation Card.
