Students of the Bandra-based RD National College have kicked off “a campaign to restore Mumbai to its former glory.” Christened Mumbai’s Most Unwanted, the anti-littering campaign seeks to clean up iconic spots destroyed by constant littering, apart from widely publicising the harmful effects of littering.

“We aim to inspire and empower the society in restraining its members from spoiling the beautiful landscape of our city by disposing trash in an appropriate manner,” said Moin Shaikh, the students’ group leader involved in the campaign. Activities Shaikh’s group has planned include social media activities like maintaining a Facebook page on the issue, releasing promotional videos of the campaign. “The purpose of the

MumbaisMostUnwanted page on Facebook is to create awareness and keep its followers updated about all our campaigns,” said Shaikh.

Another student, Saachi Ramchandani, said, “We have designed creative dustbins and placed them at various spots, including food courts in malls. It’s designed such that when a person uses it, a hand holding a chocolate pops out of a hidden panel. One of our members will be hiding inside the bin, while others will record the users’ reactions as a video to be uploaded on the internet. We will ask them to sign on the side of the bin to show support.”

At a similar exercise at Infiniti mall, where students wearing costumes made of junk/waste paraded around, fetched them a great response. At an event in Mega mall, they created music from instruments made out of waste, which drew a huge response.
Further, the students have scheduled a beach clean-up on September 21, after one-and-a-half days of Ganesh Chaturthi, for which their principal has come out in their support.

In the event where students from other schools and colleges are expected to participate, participants will walk a pre-planned stretch on the Juhu beach and clean up any immersion litter they spot on their way. Videos of people promising not to litter will be shot and compiled into a small film, which will include bytes of celebrities supporting the cause.
