A leopard cub died after it fell into a dry well at
Chinchave in Nashik on Sunday evening.

Villagers spotted the leopard cub and informed the forest officials, who tried to rescue the cub.

After several hours, the cub, which appeared weak and wounded,  was brought up. However, the animal succumbed to its injuries on Sunday.

Officials said the cub must have fallen in the well while searching for water.  The drought-like situation in this part of Nashik is now taking a toll on its wildlife.

Meanwhile, a leopard that had created fear and panic in Chaas and Nalwade in Sinnar taluka was trapped after the forest department planted a cage in one of the fields in the area.

Villagers had earlier reported sightings even as the leopard preyed on cattle and dogs.

Acceding to the villagers’ demands, the authorities laid a trap in the field of Sudam Darade, and on Sunday morning, the roars of the trapped animal could be heard. Officials shifted the cage to the Mohadari forest area. The leopard will be released into the wild after a microchip is fitted under its tail, said range forest officer ND Navale.
