ShareMUMBAI: The 'wardrobe malfunctions' at the Lakme Fashion Week had the state legislature in a flutter on Monday.
Opposition members demanded that strict action be taken against the organisers as well as television channels that telecast the "embarrassing moments" again and again.
They were supported by members of the ruling Congress-NCP coalition.
State BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, MLC, said, "Whether by design or accident, the malfunctioning was not a pleasing sight or a moment of pride for the models." More disgusting, he said, was the way in which the media kept repeating the visuals.
Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe described the episode as "disgusting" and said it should not go unpunished. Congress MLA Varsha Gaikwad said, "Whether a fashion show or a road show it is the woman who becomes a victim."
The legislators said clips of the bare-all wardrobes that kept slipping off were shocking. "But we could not censor them as they were an integral theme on all news channels," one said.
Shiv Sena leader Pramod Navalkar said, "The Tatas built the National Centre for the Performing Arts for classical music, dance, and theatre, not to provide a platform for this kind of show. Tomorrow we will have naked models cat-walking inside temples."
Council Chairman Shivaji Deshmukh directed the government to take note of the issue. But a senior minister said the government is under pressure from various groups not to take action against the organisers, particularly because the who's who of the city, including some senior politicians, attended the shows.
