Laymen will be trained in critical care; workshop to be held in Pune

For the first time since its inception in 1993, the Pune branch of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM) will celebrate its foundation day on November 27.

It will include awareness workshops and lectures for the general public on how to save a life and crucial time by using basic life support and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

CPR is an emergency procedure consisting of external cardiac massage until emergency care arrives. In these critical instances, trained commoners may save a life by starting immediate chest
compressions.

Dr Shivkumar Iyer, chairperson of the Pune branch, told reporters, “We will be training people who play the role of bystanders on how to react and how to save the time of the person who has met with an accident.”

This training will be conducted in prominent hospitals in Pune by senior intensivists and experts. The programme and lectures will be for free, said Iyer.
