With the arrest of five persons, the Thane police today claimed to have busted a major theft involving a number of laptops from HCL godown at Bhiwandi.
Addressing reporters in Thane, additional commissioner of police (crime) Dhananjay Kamlakar said that those arrested were selling the laptops to the needy students at a throwaway price of Rs8000. Students who purchased it were not not aware that the laptops were stolen, he said.
The police recovered 41 laptops and 7 YTFT Monitors collectively valued at about Rs10.81 lakh.
The arrested include Kiran Tompe, 19, Jayesh Arun Mukadam, 25, Moreshwar Dakhi, 19, Vishal Bhokar, 19 and Deepak Tompe, 22 all residents of Kalher in Bhiwandi.
In an unrelated case, police have arrested nine persons involved in theft of cloth bales worth Rs5.52 lakh.
