If you are often irked about the poor quality of the city’s longest flyover in Lalbaug, your worries are far from over. The officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have not yet scheduled the relaying of the surface of the 2.5km flyover.

Contrary to reports in some sections of the media, the Lalbaug flyover relaying will not be complete before Diwali. MMRDA metropolitan commissioner Rahul Asthana had earlier assured that the flyover’s surface will be completely re-laid. “There are three-four joints where the surfacing needs major repairs. We also have to identify the potholes or the rough patches on the flyover, which need to be repaired. The process of identifying these spots is going on at the moment. After the flyover developed some potholes during monsoon, we repaired them temporarily.

Now we have to do complete relaying,” said a senior MMRDA official, requesting anonymity.

“We cannot say how many  days it will take. Once the contractor gets us the report of the quantum of work, then we can declare the schedule,” added another official. Sources in MMRDA have confirmed that the work will only begin in the first week of November.

Within days of its inauguration in June, the flyover had developed potholes and rough patches. While the technical advisory committee of the state government does not permit laying of asphalt after May 15 every year, they decided to take the risk since the state political leadership was in a hurry to start the flyover, which was constructed at a cost of Rs140 crore. The flyover crosses over seven vehicular and two traffic signals.
