Yuvraj Maruti Kambale, the head constable of Kolhapur police, has blamed the deputy superintendent police (home) Vijay Parkale, inspector Dnyaneshwar Mundhe and constable Avinash Powar for the alleged sexual harassment of the trainee woman constable.

Kambale was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping the trainee constable.

In his statement to the police on April 24 (before his arrest), Kambale alleged that the trio was involved in harassing the victim and pleaded his innocence in the case. He said these officials have fabricated the case against him.

Kambale was suspended on April 15, after the victim lodged a complaint, and later arrested. MP Sadashivrao Mandlik has demanded that Parkale, Mundhe and other officers named by Kambale should be immediately suspended and transferred outside the district for impartial investigation of the case.

He also demanded the transfer of district superintendent of police, Yashasvi Yadav. “Yadav is protecting the real culprits involved in the case,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

Mandlik reiterated that as many as 11 other trainee women constables were sexual harassed. “The parents of these victims have contacted me. I will disclose their details at the right time,” he said.

Yadav has refuted the allegations of the MP. “There are 71 women constables who were medically examined in the government-run Chhatrapati Pramilaraje Hospital last month before sending them to training. Of them, only two tested positive for pregnancy, including the unmarried victim. The other constable who tested positive for pregnancy is married.

Thus the MP’s allegations of sexual harassment of other women constables are baseless.”

Yadav said the police could file a defamation case against Mandlik if he continues to level baseless allegations against the district police.

“If he has evidence, then he should produce it before the police or the home ministry. It will help the investigation,” he said.

Mundhe told DNA, “The victim’s complaint does not have my name so there is no question of my involvement in this case. Secondly, I do not have any contact with the headquarters where the alleged crime happened. It is unfortunate that I am being implicated on the basis of the suspect’s statement without any proof.”
