Open spaces are a matter of concern for the whole city. As they are increasingly encroached upon, in a first, a neighbourhood festival is set to make open space a big theme.

The Juhu Hamara festival, organised by Juhu Citizens Welfare Group (JCWG), intends to go all out on the open space issue. The festival which gave a miss last year is expected to take place in February.

“It will be a milder one, not as big our previous festivals as we are operating on a shoe-string budget. But we will have most of what we normally do,” said JCWG convenor Hansel D’Souza.

The festival will be held for three days.

The budget for the festival this year is expected to be of Rs3 lakh, half of what it used to be in the previous years. The money will be raised by reaching out to sponsors. It will be held in five to six places across Juhu and Vile Parle from February 11 to 13 (tentative).

“Open spaces are getting scarce and we want to motivate people to fight for them and also take care of them.

So, this time a large quotient of the celebration will be dedicated to it. Since the BMC will formulate a DP plan soon, we want residents to enthusiastically participate in the designing of the city and demand the open spaces. We are planning to have a seminar on it where people from different places will be invited to talk about open spaces in their area, their importance and how to fight it out for them,” added D’Souza.

Apart from presentations and talks on open spaces, the festival will have plays, morning ragas at the beach, music programmes, theatre, art exhibition, games, painting contests for school children and performances by rock bands.

“The road race and the food programme were big hits last time but we may not have them this year because they need a lot of money. However, we are still getting into the nitty-gritty of the events,” he said.
