As four foreigners, including a woman, were brought back to the city from Dubai on Thursday.

Mumbai crime branch officials claimed that the multi-crore diamond heist at NSG grounds in Goregaon on Monday was planned by a five-member international gang. The fifth member, a Venezuelan, has managed to escape.

The arrested have been identified as Mexicans Guerrero Lugo Elvia Grissel, Campos Molan Elias and Gonzalez Mal Donado, and Gutterez Orlando, a Venezuelan, police said. Inspectors Arun Chavan and Milind Khetle produced the quartet before a local court on Thursday, which remanded them in police custody till September 4.

According to joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy, the five came to Mumbai from different countries on August 17 and assembled at West Inn hotel in Goregaon. “On August 23, they went to the exhibition hall and while few distracted the stall attendant, other members managed to pick up the diamond packets,” he said.

After the heist, they went to the hotel and divided the booty. “While the arrested four kept 245 pieces, their fifth accomplice, Peris Hender Valmore kept 1,641 pieces with him,” said additional commissioner, Deven Bharti.

Investigations revealed that the gang had planned the heist abroad and did not want to travel together to raise suspicion. However, after the successful attempt, they got overconfident and decided to go to Dubai together, the police added.

Roy said that the five are professional thieves and are believed to have had committed similar offences in other countries. “Grissel and Orlando are married, while the others are their accomplices. They speak only Spanish and we are communicating with them with an interpreter.

Grissel has told us that she worked as a nurse in Mexico, while the others told us that they were tradesmen. However, we have sent their details to their embassies to get more details on their background,” he said.
