It will be the same sad and soggy story like last year for the industries located in Chinchwad, Bhosari and Kudalwadi in Pimpri-Chinchwad area this monsoon. There will be no respite in these parts in case there is a heavy downpour.

Although over 100 industrial units at these locations suffered huge financial losses in the third week of July last year, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is yet to take any preventive measure.

A nala flowing near these industries overflows during heavy rains and inundates the entire area, including the premises of these units.

The owners of these over 100 factories faced a torrid time due to water logging at their units in July 2010. They had to seize operations completely for nearly a week to replace damaged machines and clean the premises.

The raw materials kept for production was also damaged.
One of the units, Jai Shree Swami Samarth Engineering Product Pvt Ltd, suffered a loss of nearly Rs1 crore as its three new machines worth Rs75 lakh were damaged due to water logging.

The Pimpri Chinchwad small industries association president, Suresh Mehtre, said, “Actually the nala cleaning work should have been completed before May 30, but the civic administration is yet to take any step.”

Apparently irked by the alleged lackadaisical attitude of PCMC, the association shot off a letter to the civic body demanding immediate cleaning of the nala.

The association also attached photos of the condition of the units last year during rains to remind them about the urgent need to clean the nala.

“It is very risky if water enters an industrial unit. Apart from damages to the machinery, there are chances of workers getting electrocuted. The civic administration should at least remember this fact and carry out the work,” he said.

The association has also demanded the civic administration to find a permanent solution to the water-logging issue.
The industrial unit holders also added in the letter that there are various canals flowing in the industrial areas.

The heights of these canals are low allowing water to enter the units. PCMC engineering department coordinator Dilip Kudale told DNA that the nala is yet to be cleaned and the administration will take urgent steps to resolve the issue.
