The Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives in custody of the Madhya Pradesh anti-terrorism squad (ATS) have denied the alleged involvement of their organisation in the murder of journalist J Dey.

According to ATS sources, the operatives told the police that their organisation had no enmity with the slain journalist and therefore there was no question of their involvement in the murder.

The Madhya Pradesh ATS had arrested 10 persons during ‘Operation Vijay’ which included three suspected IM operatives. They are currently being interrogated for terror links in the country, including the murder of two ATS personnel.

The ATS took cognisance of the media report about IM’s role in the murder and quizzed the operatives but to no avail, said a senior official on condition of anonymity.

When contacted, ATS chief Vipin Maheshwari confirmed the same.

Media reports suggested that the Mumbai police control room had received an anonymous call from Yemen claiming that IM was behind the murder of J Dey.

The caller had claimed that the IM had hired shooters from Hyderabad, Bihar and Srinagar and paid them Rs4 lakh to kill the journalist.

The IM operatives were arrested eight days before Dey’s murder. The journalist was murdered in Powai in Mumbai in a broad day light on June 11.

Meanwhile, the accused have already confessed to having killed three persons including ATS constable Sitaram Yadav at Khandwa in 2009 and the murderous attack on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Bherulal Tak in Ujjain and their involvement in eight cases of robberies including loot at Mannapuram Gold loan bank at Bhopal.

The accused have also revealed that the judges and the counsels in involved in the Ayodhya case were also in their hit list.

They are now being interrogated by different intelligence and investigative agencies including National Investigative Agency (NIA), Special Crime Branch, Gujarat, Rajasthan Anti-Terrorist Squad and Andhra Pradesh police.
