Seats in private colleges are going vacant as higher education is getting costly. To change the scenario, the corporate world should join hands with the government to fund the institutes or the students, said Baramati Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule.

She was speaking after inaugurating the renovated production technical laboratory at the College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) on Tuesday. There is also a need to give autonomy to students, allowing them to move around the universities across the country, she said.

The lab was renovated with financial help from Lalchand Hirachand Premier Trust. The Vinod Doshi group, promoters of engineering and auto company, Premier Ltd (formerly Premier Automobiles Ltd) donated Rs2 crore from the trust to modernise the laboratory. The lab is named Vinod Doshi memorial production engineering workshop.

The trust also presented five scholarships to meritorious students from financially weak sections.

Chairman of Premier Ltd, Maitreya Doshi said, “From next year, we will be giving scholarships to 10 deserving candidates from the CoEP. The scholarships will be for all four years. The students here are given the option to do paid internships with the company and can join anytime.”

The scholarship is of Rs2.5 lakh and covers tuition fees, lodging, boarding and course material required for the four-year degree programme. The only condition is academic performance, failing which the scholarship will be withdrawn. The students are selected by the faculty.

The college director, Anil Sahasrabudhe, and deputy director, BB Ahuja, were present at the function.

The laboratory was established in 1872. During the First World War, much of its machinery was commended for war purposes like testing of artillery shells. In 1927, the lab was stabilised with introduction of mechanical engineering.

Cooper Engineering in 1927 converted the obsolete boilers and steam engines into electrical ones. In 1973, a production centre was started for degree and diploma students. In 1976, the University of Pune gave departmental sanction for projects.
