Convicts Maria Susairaj and Emile Jerome, who were engaged to be married before they went to jail, shared a romantic relationship even when they were lodged in different prisons. She wrote a letter to Jerome in Kannada, pleading him to forgive her and work together to build their defence in court. She wanted to lie that she killed Grover in self defence so as to get off lightly.

The letter read: “Darling, what if I say he [Grover] forced me physically and tried to rape me by threatening me with a knife? When he kept the knife aside, I took it, panicked, and stabbed him in self defence.”
