Image: 10 dead as wall collapses in Thane

Ten labourers died on the spot while two were critically injured when a wall attached to their huts at the construction site of Tanvi Eminence collapsed suddenly on Friday afternoon. The injured were  rushed to a local hospital. Kashimira police have lodged culpable homicide case against the builder under section 304 of the IPC.

According to the locals, Tanvi Eminence had started the project near Gandhi Compound Industrial Estate behind Kashimira police station. About 15 labourers (most of them from Uttar Pradesh) were working at the site. The builder had provided them with temporary huts which were built alongside one of the old compound walls. On Friday around 1.30pm, due to heavy rain and lunch time, all the labourers were resting in their huts when the old compound wall suddenly collapsed, burying the labourers under the debris. All the workers except two (who had gone out) were injured. Fire brigade and police officials of Kashimira police station immediately rushed to the spot and started the rescue operations with the help of locals.

Speaking to DNA Miten Pandya, site manager for Tanvi Eminence said, "We managed to rescue two labourers alive. They are in critical condition. Fire brigade officials cleared the debris using JCB machine and took out 10 dead bodies. All the labourers were aged between 20 to 25 years. The injured were admitted in ICU ward of Orbit hospital on Western Express Highway." The project belongs to Tanvi group of companies and the piling work was stopped due to heavy rain, added Pandya.

The scene of the accident was scary as dead bodies were scattered all over. Rescue operations were also affected due to heavy rain but, fire brigade officials cleared all the debris within one hour. The dead bodies were sent to Tembha hospital for post-mortem.

Speaking to DNA Nitin Sambatwad, Sub-divisional Police Officer of Mira Bhayandar said, "10 bodies were taken out of debris and two were rescued. We are going to register case against the directors of the company under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code."

In his statement to police Pandya has stated that, Sangita Vijaykumar, Dayabhai Sukariya and Bhupat Lukhi are the three directors of Tanvi Eminence and that the company had given the piling contract to J Kumar.
