While the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) will decide its stand on the reformed Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) debate on July 5 in a senate meeting, all eyes are set on the IIT council meeting to be conducted on June 27 in Delhi.
According to faculty members, the council is expected to re-think on the proposal.
Meanwhile, the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) members met on Saturday for a meeting to discuss the reformed JEE.
IIT-Delhi’s senate has decided to go the IIT-Kanpur way and hold its own entrance test. IIT-B, which had been silent all this while, has finally decided that it will hold its senate meeting on July 5 to decide its stand over the ministry of human resource department’s proposal of a single national entrance test for engineering courses.
An IIT-B professor said, “While the faculty at IIT-B has shown their displeasure over the reformed pattern of JEE, the decision of its stand will be taken only in the senate meeting. However, the council meeting,to be conducted on June 27 can propose an alternative to the said proposal. There will be no issue if there is an alternative which will take into consideration all the concerns raised by IITs.”
Another professor said it will be difficult to guess what the council meeting will have in its store. “But depending on the interventions that the reformed JEE proposal has seen in the recent past, after the meeting with prime minister, there could be chances that certain points raised by the IIT circles, time and again, will be taken into consideration by the council.”
In this confusion, there is no answer to students’ worries over the year in which these reforms are to be implemented. “I need to know how to prepare. Are class 12 board marks important? What exactly will the test be like? The confusion is certainly affecting my studies,” said a class 12 student who is preparing for the JEE 2013.
The proposal to hold a common national entrance test for admission to all the engineering courses, giving weightage to class 12 board exam marks, has received opposition from the IIT circle.
The faculty members of different IITs have shot down the proposal with concerns of dilution of academic standards, and as it also challenges the autonomy enjoyed by the IITs.
