In a mass boycott, 21 students refused to appear for the Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) examinations in 2004 in protest against the alleged injustice meted out on an external examiner and eminent city doctor, Dr Chittaranjan Purandare, by the college examiners.

Dr Purandare had been charged by the FCPS for abetting plagiarism by which he allegedly helped eight students to copy the theses of previous batch students. Contesting this charge vehemently, Dr Purandare said that only three students had appeared for the 2004 exams. The others complained to the chief justice of the Bombay High Court that another examiner, Dr Rekha Davar, was demanding hefty bribes to help them clear the exams. Dr Purandare submitted that he worked in honorary capacity and, therefore, had no access to the theses submitted in the previous years.

According to Dr Purandare, “The complaint that I had abetted plagiarism was illogical since the internal examiner, Dr Davar, had verified the theses of the concerned eight students. She was also the guide for some of the allegedly copied theses.”

Dr Purandare also questioned the entire controversy, stating that the issue was cleared by the state government who later reinstated him to the position from where he was removed. “Though the inquiry by the members of the FCPS is still incomplete, it is expected to be over soon. The probe committee never called me for any interrogations,” he pointed out. “The copies under question were supposed to be submitted to two examiners who are expected to give their final verdict. The two examiners who had approved the thesis were Dr B G Boricha and Dr Davar, he said.”
