The Juhu police spent Thursday looking for an old bungalow in Jogeshwari’s Amboli area, only to eventually find out that it does not exist.

A special police team led by assistant police inspector Santosh Bhalekar was investigating two housebreaking cases at Taj building in Juhu. The police picked up Nikhil Singh, 22, a DN Nagar resident, as a suspect after they received information that he had been splurging money on himself and his friends for the last few days. They questioned him about the source of money. He reportedly told the cops that he had recently sold his ancestral bungalow in Amboli and had been spending the token amount of the transaction.

But the police failed to find the bungalow despite following Singh’s directions. It was then that they realised that Singh had taken them for a ride. “On sustained interrogation, Singh confessed to the crime and was arrested along with two of his accomplices,” said a senior police officer. The accomplices have been identified as Sumit Bhandari, 20,  and Babu Abdul Sheikh, 20.

The housebreakings took place on June 13. One of the flat belongs to Deena Oberoi, 22, a tennis player-cum-model. Cash and valuables worth over Rs9 lakh were stolen from her flat.
