After the recent honour killing in Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s home district Satara, a similar incident has occurred in Jalgaon, 422 km from Mumbai.

In this case, victim Manisha’s father Yuvraj Dhangar, uncle Rama Dhangar and grandmother Sonabhai strangulated her in her sleep on March 12 night at Pathari village in Jalgaon.

Manisha’s only fault was she was in love with an ‘outcast’ (Maratha) boy, Sandeep Patil. Sandeep was staying in front of Manisha’s house in the same village. In the face of growing opposition to their inter-cast relationship from their respective families, Sandeep and Manisha had decided to elope and marry secretly. However, their plan did not succeed as Manisha’s family got wind of it.

After killing Manisha, her father and uncle took her body and dumped it almost 30km away from their village.

“We received an anonymous phone call and a letter saying Manisha had been missing from her village and that some suspicious activities were taking place in Yuvraj Dhangar’s family,” said Pradeep Thakur, API, MIDC police station, Jalgaon.

Taking cue from the letter, the police made inquiries about Manisha’s whereabouts. Her father Yuvraj told the police that she had been missing for the past several days. “When we asked if they had registered any complaint, they said they were busy searching for her, so could not come to the police station,” said Thakur, adding that “not registering a complaint strengthened our suspicion.”

Interestingly, when the police found Manisha’s body 1km away from Yuvraj’s farm, no one came forward to identify it for three days. Thus, it was cremated, declaring it as unclaimed.

“When we grilled them, they narrated the entire story. It’s an honour killing,” Thakur added. The police have registered a case.
