Fate played a cruel game with Hiru Shivram More at the JJ Hospital. He was offered a new lease of life with the launch of the state government’s much anticipated free emergency care services provided under its health insurance scheme — the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Aarogya Yojana (RGJDAY) — on Monday. But, the 65-year-old died a day later due to severe blood loss.

More was wheeled into the state-run hospital’s operation theatre after he suffered a massive heart attack. As he lay at the operation table, his family, which was unaware that the scheme had been launched, was asked by doctors to put together about Rs6,000 for his surgery.

“It was only after we contacted the administration at the hospital and asked them to help us out, as we had a health card that he was admitted under the RGJDAY. But he died the next morning,” said Sudhir, More’s son-in-law.

Dr Manoj Joshi, a cardiac surgeon at the JJ Hospital, explained that More had ruptured his myocardium (the middle muscular layer of the heart wall), which had led to haemocardium (internal bleeding of the heart). “He lost a lot of blood on the operation table and died on Tuesday morning.”

Five other first beneficiaries of the RGJDAY, however, had a better stroke of luck.

“Out of the six emergency cases admitted under the scheme, five patients have received critical care. It was unfortunate that More, who was one of the first patients admitted under the scheme, died,” said K Venkatesham, CEO, Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Aarogya Yojana.

He added that more and more doctors are being made to attend briefing sessions to make them aware of the health insurance scheme. “The deans of all hospitals have been directed to conduct training sessions with doctors on the scheme.”
