Shivani was taken to three hospitals with severe head injuries and died at 8.30am at Nanavati hospital seven hours after the accident that injured 5 of her friends. While three friends are fighting for their lives in three different private hospitals, Shivani lost the battle after doctors tried hard to revive her.

Shivani was first taken to Cooper hospital from where she was shifted to Asha Parekh hospital and then to Nanavati hospital. According to doctors, in all these hospitals Shivani remained critical with dropping blood pressure levels and irregular pulse rate.

A senior doctor at Cooper hospital said, “She was in a very bad shape. She had major blood loss and severe head injuries. It was her family’s decision to shift her out of the hospital.”

Shivani was brought to Nanavati hospital at 6.30am. Dr Harshad Parekh, a neuro surgeon at the hospital, said, “Her heart stopped thrice in two hours and we kept trying to better her condition.”

According to doctors, Shivani had had a heart surgery and this could have been one of the factors that went against her survival. “We couldn’t even take her for a CT scan to investigate her condition. She had multiple injuries and brain damage,” added Dr Parekh.

Dr Nitin Dange, associate professor, neurosurgery department at KEM hospital and consulting neurosurgeon at Lilavati hospital, said, “If a patient has a severe head injury with a dipping blood pressure and irregular pulse rate, transport of the patient should be avoided unless and until there is no facility of ICU. Shifting the patient in such condition is very risky and not advisable.”

Like Shivani, her friend Nimisha Mane, 18, who was first taken to Bhabha hospital in Bandra was later shifted to Nanavati hospital at 7.30am. Nimisha is in coma with significant brain damage.

“She is on ventilator and has a skull bone fracture. There is some brain activity but since she has a very significant amount of brain damage, it is very difficult to comment on her improvement,” said Dr Parekh.

The other two friends, Priyanka Rai, 22, and Krishna Thevar, are admitted in the ICU of Criticare hospital in Andheri and Cooper hospital respectively.
