With the planning work on the new airport nearing completion, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) authorities have chalked out a comprehensive nine-point draft plan incorporating all modes of transit, including water ferries, to reach the new ‘greenfield’ airport not just from Mumbai, but all parts of the state.

“We have involved all the stakeholders like railways, MMRDA and all those concerned with connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region before making this plan. We have taken their suggestions and drafted this comprehensive plan. The final plan is now being given finishing touches and should be ready in a month. But it will be more or less the same as this draft plan,’’ Soma Vijay Kumar, chief general manager (transport and airport), Navi Mumbai International Airport, said.

“To start with, the connectivity to the new airport from Mumbai will be a problem unless proper and reliable means of communication are planned right now so that they can take shape by 2015, which is the official deadline for the airport. The consultants have submitted their report and we are seriously following it up with the relevant stakeholders like Central Railway, MSRDC and all such bodies involved,’’ another Cidco official said. “The plan not just includes improving and building new roads, but also upgrading new suburban rail corridors, metro links and exploiting the water route by means of hovercraft. The new sea link between Uran and Sewri will add to the connectivity plan,’’ the official added.

The report submitted to Cidco by consultants, calls for setting up a separate body to look into all aspects of the airport planning and building. On the road development front, the connectivity plan calls for widening of arterial roads and highways that will feed traffic to the new international airport. The plan also calls for widening of the existing Sion-Panvel Highway to improve accessibility from central Mumbai. “The NMIA should have proper road connectivity to the Uran-Sewri Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) that will provide fast access to traffic from the Island City and central Mumbai,’’ the plan adds.

The plan also calls for implementation of Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor to provide fast access from Kalyan and Dombivli areas. On connecting the new airport with metro links, the plan states that the airport should be given connectivity from Ghatkopar to Panvel via Mankhurd, Vashi, Belapur and the NMIA interchanging with the metro lines of MMRDA at Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar and Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd, Colaba-Siddhivinayak-Mahim and Siddhivinayak-Kharkopar and further to the NMIA.
