The police have arrested five persons in connection with the murder of three-year-old Rohit Singh at Ghatkopar. They suspect the role of a psychopath or a mentally unstable person in the incident.

Rohit had gone out to play outside his residence on Sunday afternoon. His body was found near the office of Maharashtra Navnirman Vahtuk Sena (MNVS) by a security guard in the evening.

After questioning people in the locality, the police learnt that Rohit was seen with a middle-aged person that afternoon. However, the eyewitness could not provide enough inputs for the police to prepare a sketch of the man. The police suspect that the person could be a local resident.

The police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder. It was suspected to be a case of sexual assault earlier. However, medical tests have ruled out any such possibility. But police sources say healing injuries were found on the private parts of the victim. It points to earlier sexual assaults on the kid. The police are also looking into the possibility of an enemy of Rohit’s parents.

Rohit’s throat was slit with a sharp weapon, which is suspected to be glass as glass pieces were found at the spot.

The five persons detained by the police are suspects and are presently being interrogated.

“The five have been picked up as the investigation does not show that the victim knew the accused and so went with him. It could be someone from the same locality, who could also be known to the victim’s family and people from the locality. Though the suspects haven’t revealed anything yet, we are questioning them to know if they were involved or not,” a police official said, adding, “We suspect that the accused could be a mentally unstable person or a psychopath.”

The crime branch’s unit seven is also carrying out an investigation and questioning suspects.
