Like every year, 22-year-old Nayan Gautami was looking forward to take part in the immersion of his favourite god.

Nayan, who is a labourer and lives in Malad, went to Marve beach with his cousins on Sunday to take part in the Ganapati immersion procession at his cousin’s place near his house.

A few hours later, he was being rushed to the hospital as the 13-feet idol fell on him. Doctors say chances of him being able to walk are very less.

“He and his cousins had gone to Marve beach for the visarjan of a local Ganapati idol. While lifting the idol, people lost their balance and the huge idol fell on Nayan,” said Ramesh, Nayan’s father.
The doctors said Nayan fractured his spine.

He was taken to Bhagwati Hospital at Borivli. Later, his family shifted him to a private hospital as there was no improvement in his condition.

“He was lying in Bhagwati Hospital and no tests were done. We didn’t know what treatment was given to him. We shifted him to a private hospital where MRI and CT scan were done. We shifted him to KEM Hospital on Monday as his condition was serious,” said Ramesh, Nayan’s father.

Nayan has a younger brother.

“He has got a fracture in the lower half of the spine because of which he can’t move his lower limbs. He has also lost control over bowel and bladder,” said Dr Pradeep Bhosale, head of the department, orthopaedic, KEM Hospital.

KEM doctors will operate on him in a week but are there is less than 10% chance of reversal of his condition. “We are waiting for him to be fit and the swelling to heal. After which, we will do decompression, spinal stabilisation and bone reconstruction surgery. This will help us to mobilise him on a wheel chair. Our efforts will be to see he is not bedridden.”

“I hope he gets well soon. We have not told him about his condition and assured him that all will be well soon,” said Ramesh.
