The Indian Navy added might to its warship fleet with the launch of INS Chennai, a guided missile destroyer. It was inaugurated by Elizabeth Antony, the wife of defence minister AK Antony, at the Mazagon Dock on Thursday.

INS Chennai is the third and last missile destroyer of Project-15A and is being built by the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL).

When commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2013, INS Chennai will be the most potent vessel with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors. She will be fitted with the indigenous supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missile system, Mazagon Dock officials said.

During the launch ceremony, Antony emphasised on the significance of having a well protected coastline. He also said the security forces will be experiencing a “hot summer” this year as countries hostile to India’s interest would try to infiltrate more terrorists into the country.

“The army is ready to face any attempts to sneak in more terrorists across the border. Still, the summer is going to be a hot summer as far as security is concerned,’’ he said.

Talking about destroyer, Antony said the launching of Chennai marks a major revolution in technology. “It is heartening that Mazagon Dock Limited has taken the lead in harnessing technology in fortifying the maritime capabilities of the country,” he said.

The 163-metre long Chennai, propelled by four turbines, is designed to achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots. The indigenously designed ship will have state-of-the art weapons and sensors, stealth features, an advanced action information system, a comprehensive auxiliary control system, world-class modular living spaces, sophisticated power distribution system and a host of other advanced features.

The indigenous supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missile system will enable the ship to engage shore-based and naval surface targets at long ranges.

It will have sophisticated multi-function radar systems, which will provide accurate data on surface and air targets. Four AK-630 rapid-fire guns will provide the ship with close-in defence capability while an MR gun will enable her to provide effective naval gunfire support. Indigenously developed twin tube torpedo launchers and anti-submarine rocket launchers will add punch to the ship’s anti-submarine capability.
