The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) seems to have learnt a lesson from last week’s episode in which bus driver Santosh Mane mowed down eight people, as they have decided to beef up the security at the Swargate ST depot.

The MSRTC on Sunday decided to appoint eight private security guards and four additional traffic controllers at the Swargate ST Depot. The guards will keep eye on the movement of buses at the depot.

DNA had carried a report on January 26 about the poor security arrangement at the Swargate bus depot on the day Mane drove away with an ST bus from the parking lot of the depot.

The MSRTC had appointed only four security guards, along with four policemen to guard the bus depot for 24 hours. These guards have to look after the security of a total of 115 buses at the Swargate depot, along with 1,450 buses from other depots.

After the poor security arrangements were exposed, the MSRTC officials held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the issue and decided to deploy additional security guards at the depot.

Along with the Swargate depot, the Shivajinagar ST depot will also get additional security.

Vijay Divate, senior depot manager of Swargate ST Depot said, “The order to appoint additional security guards at the Swargate depot was issued on Sunday. These eight security guards will be from a government-authorised private security agency. Apart from these guards, four additional traffic controllers will also be appointed.”

“The MSRTC has decided to appoint eight security guards at the Shivajinagar ST depot as well. The order has been issued and these guards and controllers will be deployed at the depots in the next couple of days,” he said.
