When it comes to opting for green initiatives, Puneites seem to develop a lukewarm attitude.

That might explain why of the more than 7 lakh properties in the city only 14,805 have availed of green initiatives like rainwater harvesting, vermi-composting, solar lighting and heaters.

In 2008, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) announced that owners would get 5 to 10% rebate in property tax if they go for the green initiatives. A 5% rebate would be given if the owner availed of one of the three initiatives and 10% for those going in for two or more initiatives.

However, only 14,805 property holders have responded to the initiative so far. Of these, 2,956 owners put up solar lighting systems and 8,646 vermi-composting pits. Only 56 property owners set up rainwater harvesting systems.

The property owners who seek a rebate on these grounds have to submit an application to the ward offices. The departments send their officers for inspection after which the tax rebate is granted.

Vilas Kanade, deputy municipal commissioner and in-charge of tax collection, said the PMC had taken steps to popularise these initiatives.

“We have printed details of the rebate in calendars, diaries and tax receipts of the civic body to popularise them,” he said.
