The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to give a facelift to the famous Mahalaxmi temple and its surrounding area through a special project of Rs120 crore.
Maharashtra minister for home department, Satej Patil, and KMC commissioner Vijay Singhal made a presentation on the project on Tuesday in the KMC for the corporators.
“Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, during his recent Kolhapur visit, has assured sanctioning of funds for the temple. Now, we have prepared the detailed project report of Rs120 crore. The funds will be provided by the state government. We are expecting that the funds will be released in three years,’’ Patil told DNA.
The temple dates back to 700 AD and is considered as a masterpiece of the Hemadpanthi style of architecture. The temple attracts thousands of devotees from all over the country. Dassera is the main festival of Goddess Mahalaxmi.
Singhal said the temple and its surrounding area will be developed innovatively. While restoration will be done inside the temple, new facilities for tourists and devotees will be created.
Traffic management and vehicle mobility has been given importance. A ‘no vehicle zone’ will be created at few locations, while new bus stands, and the parking facilities will be added at a certain distance from the temple.
The heritage walkway is the main attraction of the project. Battery operated buses will be made available for commuting to these places from the temple. The tourists can purchase various items which are specialty of Kolhapur, like chappals, jaggery and jewellery at the shops set up at specific locations.
