Eyewitnesses identify Nooriya Haveliwala

The trial in the drunk and drive case against India-born US national Nooriya Haveliwala started before the special NDPS court on Wednesday. Four eye witnesses identified Haveliwala in the court as the accused who was driving the car and ran over people under the influence of alcohol.

Haveliwala, a beautician by profession, on January 29, 2010, ran over six people, killing two. The two deceased were sub-inspector Dinanath Shinde and a biker Afzal Ibrahim. Other injured cops were Shailesh Jadhav, Magan Gaikwad, Ashok Shinde and Shivram Shinde.

The trial started at 11:30am and went on till 4pm on Wednesday. The four eyewitnesses Jadhav, Ashok Shinde, Lala Shinde and a women constable Vijaya Laxmi Hiremat were cross examined in the court. All the witnesses identified Nooriya.

According to the police, Haveliwala was arrested on January 30, 2010 for allegedly killing two people, including a police constable.
“All the witnesses identified Nooriya. Medical officers who examined her after the incident will be called in the next hearing ,” said public prosecutor Kiran Raikar. The next hearing is on March 21.
