Extortion gang kingpin nabbed after four months in Mumbai

Rohit Raut, 29, was arrested from Ahmedabad and brought to Mumbai on Wednesday. Raut was produced in the local court on Thursday, which remanded him in police custody.

The Kanjurmarg police finally nabbed the kingpin of an extortion gang who had been absconding since four months. The gang had targeted a construction contractor and threatened to kill him if he did not agree to their demands.

Rohit Raut, 29, was arrested from Ahmedabad and brought to Mumbai on Wednesday. Raut was produced in the local court on Thursday, which remanded him in police custody.

The police said the four-member gang has been involved in crimes in Kanjurmarg and nearby areas since past few years. They have cases of robbery, theft, rioting, attempt to murder and extortion registered against them at several police stations.

In June Raut and his accomplices Rahul Kanalkar, 36, Nitin Bhoir, 42 and Vijay Patekar barged into the complainant Fracis Lobo’s office and threatened to kill him if he did not part with Rs5 lakh. They kept harassing him He finally registered a complaint with the Kanjurmarg police after 15 days.

Raut’s accomplices were arrested on June 21 but Raut managed to escape. Early this week the police came to know that Raut was hiding at his in-laws’ residence in Ahmedabad.
