Expressway accident kills five members of Kharghar family, five others hurt.
The journey back from their native place proved fatal for Lokhande family from Kharghar.
The family comprising a woman, her two sons, their wives and children, all of who had gone to Solapur to attend the Malshiras fair around 15 days ago. While on their way back home to Kharghar on Saturday, their vehicle — a Mahindra Xylo - met with an accident, killing five of the family and injuring the rest.
The accident happened on Mumbai Pune Expressway near Asud village at around 5.15am when the vehicle (MH-06-L-9797) rammed into a truck (PB-06-L- 8599) ahead of them. The police suspect that the driver, Anil Ashok Lokhande, might have fallen asleep on the wheel, resulting in the crash.
Thirty-year-old Anil died on the spot along with his wife Sujata (28), three-year-old son Abhishek and his brother’s wife Rani Sunil Lokhande (25). His mother Latika Ashok Lokhande (57), who sustained head injuries, died while undergoing treatment at Life Line hospital, Panvel. Anil’s elder brother Sunil (33), his children Gayatri (4), Pragati (5) and Sunil’s son Shubham (7) sustained injuries in the accident and were taken to MGM, Kamothe hospital.
The driver of the truck fled from the spot. “The truck has been seized, even though the driver is still missing. We have registered a case against him,” KT Vidhate from Kalamboli Police Station said.
Sunil and Anil were staying at Gharkul CHS in Kharghar in different wings and ran Shubham Travels together. Madan Burkume, a resident of the society, said, “They were a united and peaceful family, always together in whatever they did. Their family was well-known in Gharkul CHS, and they mingled very well with people. They were also known to help the society and its members whenever required.”
